Four large Canadian resorts are written up here as hotels. The entries stay with the parts of each complex that any visitor can walk through: entrance halls, restaurants, theatres, spa floors, golf ground and water frontage. The gaming floor is not described, not assessed and not discussed anywhere on this site.

Montréal Casino & Hotel

The house

The complex stands on Île Notre-Dame and grew out of pavilions raised for the world exhibition that Montréal hosted. The former French pavilion carries most of the floors, and a smaller neighbouring pavilion was joined to it. The house is run by the provincial operator, and its public parts hold restaurants, bars, a hall used for shows and terraces that face the water.

The streets around

The island lies in the Saint Lawrence and is reached by bridge or by road through Parc Jean-Drapeau, which also carries the rowing basin and the motor circuit. From the metro station on the neighbouring island there is a walk or a shuttle to the door. The park side is open ground with paths along the water.

One thing to ask

Write ahead to ask which restaurants and bars keep regular hours, because the schedule moves with the season and with events held on the island. It is also worth asking how the accommodation relates to the pavilions, since sleeping rooms and public rooms sit in separate parts of the site.

Fallsview Casino Resort

The house

The resort is cut into the escarpment above the river, so the entrance level on the ridge and the lower floors sit at different heights. Inside there is a glass-roofed shopping arcade, a theatre used for concerts and touring shows, a spa, several restaurants and a hotel block above. The building is run together with the other Niagara house by the same operator.

The streets around

It stands in the Fallsview district, on the high ground where most of the large hotels are gathered. The street drops steeply from here towards the parkway and the falls themselves, and an incline railway covers the same slope. Restaurants, a tower and the parkland walk are all within a short distance on foot.

One thing to ask

Ask by email which shows are on while you are there and whether the theatre nights change the hours of the restaurants. The spa and the arcade may keep their own schedule, and access for people who are not staying in the hotel block is worth confirming before you plan an evening.

River Rock Casino Resort

Richmond, British Columbia, Canada

The house

The resort sits by the Fraser in the Bridgeport part of Richmond, on flat ground close to the water. It holds a hotel block, a large hall used for concerts and boxing nights, a spa, a food court and several restaurants. A marina and a stretch of river frontage belong to the site, and the operator runs other houses across the province.

The streets around

Bridgeport station is next to the building, which puts the airport a few stops one way and central Vancouver a short ride the other. Around it the district is low and industrial, with dyke paths along the river used by walkers and cyclists. The bridge to Vancouver crosses just north of the site.

One thing to ask

Ask whether the hall has a show on during your stay, since the whole ground floor gets busier on those nights. The marina, the riverside path and the spa each have their own arrangements, and it is worth asking which of them are open to visitors who are not staying in the hotel.

Casino Rama Resort

Rama, Ontario, Canada

The house

The resort stands on the lands of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, near the eastern shore of Lake Couchiching. It holds a hotel block, a large entertainment hall that has carried touring acts for decades, a spa, restaurants and a golf course on the same ground. The house is operated under agreement with the First Nation rather than by it alone.

The streets around

The setting is rural: fields, bush and lake shore rather than streets, with Orillia the nearest town along the water. Roads bring most visitors, and coaches run from the larger cities to the south. Beyond the site there are trails, marinas and the locks of the waterway that links the lakes.

One thing to ask

Ask which parts of the site stay open outside the summer months, because the golf course and some of the food rooms follow the season. If a concert matters to you, ask how the hall is arranged for that night, since the seating and the entrance route change from show to show.
